Investigation begins as families deal with loss

Two people are being remembered and an investigation continues into the explosion that took their lives. April Roper, a homeowner, and Larry Radford, a Questar Gas employee, were killed Tuesday afternoon in a natural gas explosion in Roper's new Saratoga Springs home.

Questar spokesman Darren Shepherd said investigators are trying to determine how natural gas from an outdoor leak migrated into the house and what caused it to ignite. Evidence is being sent away for analysis and the results might take weeks or months.

"It could be some time," Shepherd said.

Police say the explosion happened after work crews punctured a natural gas line in the Sunrise Meadows neighborhood near the home around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Questar employees repaired the 2-inch plastic gas line that serves the neighborhood and then evacuated nearby homes while searching for gas.

'Love' rises far beyond 'chick lit'

Ayelet Waldman, author of "Love and Other Impossible Pursuits," has a famous writer husband: Michael Chabon. With that out of the way, I can review Waldman's novel, just out in paperback, as if she were any other writer.

But she isn't just any other writer. Waldman's five books possess that indescribable, compulsively readable quality that makes terms like "page-turner" feel apt.

"Love" tells the story of Emilia Greenleaf, a New York lawyer who has recently lost her newborn daughter to SIDS. Her emotional journey is interlaced with the story of her relationship with her precocious, tactless stepson Will and of her foundering marriage to Will's father.

Emilia feels everything one would expect from a woman in her position: unbearable loss, guilt and helplessness.

Luxury homes with a private gondola

Kadenwood, Intrawest ULC's new luxury housing development located at the highest buildable point on Whistler Mountain will also have the distinction of being the first ski resort neighbourhood in Canada with its own gondola service.

The ski-in, ski-out neighbourhood, which consists of 60 large home-sites, is located 711 vertical feet above Whistler's Creekside Village. The private gondola will carry new owners and their luggage (think skis and snowboards in the winter, and strollers and bicycles for summer) from their new home site to-and-from Whistler's valley trails or Creekside in approximately six minutes.

"This new gondola will offer unprecedented, year-round access, and provide Kadenwood homeowners and guests with a swift and convenient connection to the numerous amenities of Creekside Village while maintaining the neighbourhood's exclusivity and privacy," says John Morley, VP of Development for Intrawest Placemaking, Intrawest's resort development subsidiary.

In Tomorrow's Paper

My heart aches for him. A room in the house Adam shares with his fiancee in Saskatoon is furnished and ready for a baby boy - the crib, the stroller, the toys.

But the child isn't coming home.

This past week, a Saskatchewan court denied "Adam" (his court-appointed pseudonym) custody of his eight-month-old child. Instead, the boy will be raised by a Prince Albert couple selected by "Rose," the birth mother.

The court also denied Adam an order giving him access to the boy for at least a solid year - unless the parties to the case agree on an access arrangement, which seems unlikely, given the raw emotions generated by the case.

But did this ruling set a legal precedent? Do estranged fathers have fewer parental rights under Canadian law now than they did before Adam took his fight to court? .
