Johnston considers trail for Pioneer Parkway
Virginia Soelberg, a longtime Johnston resident and member of the city's tree board, has been surprised at the lack of sidewalks and walking trails in her neighborhood along Pioneer Parkway.
"I like to bike with my grandchildren during the summer, but it's so difficult to bike in the street with young children," Soelberg said. "And especially at this time of the year, you're forced to jump over snow mounds to get out of the way of traffic while you're jogging."
Soelberg is not the only one to have raised the issue with city officials.
"We've heard comments from drivers that it's not safe having people bike, jog or push strollers in the street," said Johnston Park Superintendent Ron Ward.
City planners are now considering one of two designs for a 1.3-mile Pioneer Parkway Trail along the west and south sides of the street and an accompanying sidewalk on the north and east.
